The best time to start training…

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the second best time is now.

Think of your training to Queenstown Marathon as this tree.

There is no 12 week solution to this problem although 12 weeks is a start.

Do you know what is better than 12 weeks? Any number greater than 12!

You know when an excellent time to plant a tree is? In the middle of winter!

Fitness has no end date and it’s beginning is when you choose it to be. It is built over weeks, months, years. Every little bit that you do right now goes to make a better you in the future.

It needn’t be hard, it needn’t take long, a walk today may be a jog tomorrow. The important thing is that you make a start.

If you are not already training and are not coming from a history of athletic fitness then it is even more important to start building your cardiovascular fitness and conditioning the central nervous system early.

The best way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. So too is fitness built. Not with infrequent massive bites but with many nibbles. And if you do have to eat an elephant you should seriously consider starting that meal with consideration for how long it will take to complete.

The fitness that you establish now and use at Queenstown Marathon is yours for future events as well, so appreciate the enduring value that training has in this instance to influence future outcomes.

Make your training enjoyable by sharing the journey with friends and help hold each other accountable for your progress. Get a squad together and talk about what you want to achieve and how you will get there. Set some goals for race day and find fun in the process and execution.
